Car-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy) is a state of the art immunotherapy used to treat many types of cancers, most commonly blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. It is a non-radiation cancer treatment that uses genetically engineered immune cells to target and destroy cancer cells. Unlike traditional treatments like chemotherapy or radiation, CAR-T therapy harnesses the body’s immune system to fight cancer without exposing patients to dangerous radiation.
This groundbreaking cancer treatment is highly effective and sought after, with the most common barrier to access being the price involved. In the United States for example, to get Car-T Cell therapy for cancer the cost can approach $1 million dollars or more. But there are other locations where this therapy can be accessed at lower prices, with Thailand emerging as the leading destination. Car-T Cell therapy is now offered in Thailand at some of the leading hospitals, with the Thai government making large investments to lower it’s cost and promote the availability of the treatment.
In an article from January 29th in Thailand’s leading newspaper the Bangkok Post, Car-T cell therapy and other “living drug” therapies are discussed with the plan to make these therapies cheaper and more accessible in the Kingdom.
A short summary of the article:
Mahidol University has launched a fund to raise 1 billion baht for Thailand’s first “living drug” facility, focusing on CAR T-cell therapy to treat cancer. This facility aims to reduce the high costs of these advanced treatments and make them more accessible to Thai & International patients. The university hopes to position Thailand as a leader in innovative medical technologies.

The process of CAR T Cell therapy can take a month or longer with the general outline of the steps being:
Collecting the T Cells: Your blood is drawn and is passed through a tube into a machine which removes your T cells. The machine returns the remainder of your blood into your body through a different tube.
Engineering the T Cells: In the lab, scientists engineer your T cells by adding CAR. Then the lab allows the CAR T cells to multiply to substantially higher levels.
Infusing the CAR T Cells: Once your CAR T cells have multiplied to a satisfactory level, they are injected back through your via a standard IV infusion.
**In some cases the medical team may recommend small doses of chemotherapy before CAR T cell administration to bolster the effectiveness of the CAR T therapy **
