NY POST Report: Thailand A Top 10 Safe Country for Solo Female Travelers

Thailand is one of the safest countries for women traveling alone

In a 2025 study by Everly life insurance, which was just published in the New York post, Thailand was ranked as one of the top 10 nations globally as a destination for solo female travelers in 2025 (The official ranking of Thailand was 8). The high ranking drew praise from Thailand’s tourism officials with government house spokeswoman Sasikarn Watthanachan describing the report as “Powerful Confirmation” regarding the countries tourism sector. The report further strengthens the kingdom of Thailand’s stellar reputation for travelers. The study was conducted with central factors such as homicide rates, nighttime safety, and societal/cultural trends regarding violence against women.

Dangers women face when traveling alone & relation to Thailand

For women, traveling alone is extremely fun and rewarding, however there are unique risks – these risks should not be taken lightly. Depending on the country of travel, there may be unique factors to consider for women such as local culture, crime rates, legal protection, scams, theft and more – While nobody should ever throw care into the wind, Thailand is among the safest places in the world for solo female travelers due to it’s friendly culture, religious (Buddhist) values, high developed tourism infrastructure, low crime rates & laws.

Sexual harassment is a real danger in some countries for women where cultural norms may be different. A woman traveling by herself can be subject to being bothered in the street, or being inappropriately touched in busy areas such as trains or buses.

In Thailand this risk is extremely low and reports of sexual harassment are rare. Thailand is known to take sexual assaults and harassments serious often following up and arresting perpetrators in the rare cases of inappropriate behavior.

For women travelers who are alone, in many countries they can also be at an increased risk of being targeted for theft as some culprits may look for them thinking they are vulnerable with less chance of resistance. Scams can also be an issue such as pickpocketing or overcharging a women by herself

Blatant theft is quite rare in Thailand, however some scams do exist. Most commonly you will find Taxi drivers (who are low paid workers) might try to pressure their customer to negotiate on a fare without turning on the taxi meter. While the negotiated fare typically is still not that high by western standards, this act is still illegal on their part – The key here is to just say no to a driver who offers this and find another taxi (there a lots of taxis available). It is also advisable to avoid private tours with taxi drivers you don’t know, or drivers who offer you a private tour for a few extra baht after you have hired him – These drivers might take you to places and pressure you to buy things that you are not interested in, or drive you to places that you don’t know that could leave you feeling lost or out of your bearings. Also book tours with reputable travel agencies to avoid these situations.

Other factors to consider are crime rates and safety. In some countries to walk alone at night it scary and dangerous, especially for women

In Thailand crime rates are remarkably low. It is the type of country where walking about in the middle of the night is low risk, and people feel safe doing it. It is not necessarily an advisable activity, but all things considered it is not dangerous in comparison to other places.

Tips for lone female travelers in Thailand

– When visiting Buddhist temples dress conservatively, especially if you plan on going into the temple. People who are not dressed appropriately will be turned away and asked to cover up before being allowed in. Buddhist temples are sacred spaces for Thais and you will be expected to cover your body when going inside (Shoulders, knees and chest). Skirts covering the knee, pants, or sweaters/shawls for women are advisable.

– Have an emergency contact that speaks your language who you can reach at any time. Health Tours Thailand provides 24/7 emergency service (whatsapp and phone) which can be helpful for peace of mind, or in the event of an unexpected emergency (food poisoning, translation needs, getting lost, slips and falls, etc). Other popular services offered by Health Tours Thailand include airport fast track, airport transfers, car services, visa assistance, translation help, guided day tours from Bangkok & accommodation recommendations.

– Use grab taxis, taxis with meters, the BTS skytrain, or a car service at night instead of random tuk tuks (3 wheeled vehicles popular for short taxi rides) if you are alone.

– Check with a tourism company about accommodation and its location before finalizing to ensure it is the best choice for you.

– Get a local sim card at the airport of at 7/11 (sim cards are not expensive) to help you stay connected, be able to use Google maps/Google translate, and have easy access to the internet and contacts whenever you need it.

– Don’t leave drinks unattended in bars or clubs (this is a good idea in any country not only Thailand)
